Review: Benton Aloe BHA Skin Toner

Here is my review of Benton's Aloe BHA Skin Toner

This is a highly controversial product and I was reluctant to review this but alas, here it is! The Benton controversy came publicised by Sample Hime in her Report Benton to the FDA post. Please check it out before proceeding to buy this product.

Not only were there problems with a certain batch from Rose Rose Shop, the company proceeded to tell Sample Hime not to publicise this problem. Do you want to support a company that lacks ethical consideration?

As a Beauty Blogger, my face/skin is very important. I did not want to risk it with a company that lacks quality control but decided to take up the chance to review this because the Aloe BHA Toner also garners mixed responses. You either LOVE this, or you HATE it.

Curiousity got the best of me and after a week of testing it on a small patch of my skin, I took the plunge to apply it on half of my face to see the difference and power of this product.

On to the review!

As much as I love weird, cute and completely outrageous packaging, I am all for practical and simple looks. There is a distinct rainforest green tint to correspond with Aloe Vera and also the protect the the ingredients in this toner, keeping it fresh for longer. Dark tints in the packaging of skincare protects are most often used to protect the ingredients in the product. For example the popular OST Vitamin C serum which I really liked.

The bottle is sturdy plastic, with a black ribbed screw on cap.

Near the bottom, there is the expiry date and batch number. It has a 2 year duration date.

Due to the consistency of the toner, the small opening is a god send. Usually toners are watery and require a cotton pad for application but because this is slightly sticky, I pour two drops of this product and apply it directly onto my skin. I would use 4 drops for my entire face. Product is easily distributed.

It is quite a large and generous bottle, with 200ml.

With Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Water the main and most used ingredient, this toner is sticky and does not absorb as quickly as regular watery toners like the Etude House Wonder Pore FreshnerFor people who really dislike heavy products on their face, might not like this product. It is not heavy per se, but you can feel the toner sit on your skin until it absorbs later on. Personally I quite like it. It feels extremely moisturising and hydrating, you can really feel and see the difference when you're testing it on half your face.

On the left side of my face, I continued with my regular summer skin routine after cleansing. Toner and moisturiser. While on the right side I added this Benton Aloe BHA Skin Toner. My skin feels plumper with the toner. When I apply makeup, it feels like it makes my BB cream apply smoother.

I had to edit the light in the above picture to make sure you can clearly see the texture on my skin. The consistency is light, moves and looks like water, however when applied onto the skin, it feels slightly sticky. Skin looks glowy as well due to the snail secretion filtrate.

Smells very slightly alcoholic. And I don't mean wine or beer... the alcohol disinfectant. It's incredibly faint though so there's relatively no smell.

Now I really wanted to review this product for at least 2 weeks but then I decided against it just in case the worst case scenario happens again (refer to Sample Hime).

Originally, I had no active pimples. Acne scars have been my mortal enemy for the last year, and also large unpleasant pores. I was really looking forward to the scarring healing properties of snail secretion in this product. Snail slime extract is incredibly popular and I have always wanted to try it.

Come day 4, half way into the week, I developed a small yet uncomfortable bump on my nose. I rarely get ingrown and painful pimples, and the fact that it was on my nose (where I was testing this toner) made me a lot more cautious in examining my skin. However apart from this pimple, everything else was going smoothly. I felt like my scars were lightening up, even though just slightly because it's only the fourth day, and things were looking optimisitic.

A week after my first application, the pimple on my nose refused to go away. It was still painful to touch, and looking extremely red. Two more spots appeared, as circled in the photo, and I discontinued use of it straight away. One day of not using it, and with my trustworthy potent acne spot treatment, the redness decreased by tenfold and the small pimples disappeared.

Truthfully I am afraid of starting use of this toner again but I probably will in the near future. I liked the finish and hydrating feeling of it on my skin, despite my breakouts. Typically I do break out from new cleansers, toners and moisturisers but I am acting extra cautious with this brand due to the controversy.

I can not say that I recommend or do not recommend this product. I highly urge you to read the above post from Sample Hime and decide for yourself whether you still want to. Benton still produces a lot of skincare that people enjoy, and it seems like only ONE batch was contaminated. I think this controversy really reinforces the need to test products before use. And also put into light how truly ethical this business is.

Will I repurchase this? No because I have 95% of the toner left after a weeks use.

Overall I do have positive feelings towards this product and I do like it. Unfortunately I broke out from it. I will continue to try this toner out in the future and will update this post at that time.

Review: Skin Watchers UV Success Sun Block + Common Sun Protection Questions Answered

Reviewing Skin Watchers UV Success Sun Block for you guys today!

I am a sunscreen/sunblock junkie. Before my obsession with lip products, I had an obsession with sunscreen. You don't hear about it much because I am not qualified to properly review sun protection. In my room I have a whole section of my table dedicated to sun protection products. Sadly I do not go out much these days (lazy day everyday) so I haven't been using them.. which makes me sad. Just like when I have a new lip stick or fashion item I want to use and wear but can't because there's no occassion to permit it or the weather/season does not match.

When I was given the opportunity to review this sun block from a Korean brand that is not relatively well known I was reluctant because I like to use sunscreens that have been tested and proven to effectively deflect or block UVA/UVB rays. But I took the plunge anyways because I really like sunblock....

Because I do not have the correct equipment to test how effective the sun protection is, I will only be reviewing this sunblock via observations.

Ultraviolet A rays, or what I call UV Aging, is what causes premature aging because it penetrates deeper into the skin.

Ultraviolet B rays are what people typically use sunscreen/sunblock to avoid. UV Burning (these are not scientific terms) usually only penetrate into the epidermis (outer layers) and causes sunburn.

✰ Sun Protection Factor (SPF) mainly refers to protection from UVB rays.

Broad Spectrum Protection refers to protection from both UVA and UVB rays.

Did you know the PA+ PA++ PA+++ and so forth rating system is not approved by the FDA? So I always use sunscreen that says Broad Spectrum Protection. However this is the system used in Japan/Korea commonly. Each country have different standards for their different climates. Just like how the British Standard for sunglasses is lower than the Australian/NZ standard because our sun is more harsh.. Your sunglasses should be labelled with the Australian/New Zealand standard AS/NZS 1067:2003. If they don't they are only fashion spectacles.

Always wear sun protection if you are outside for longer than 10 minutes. Doesn't matter if it's cloudy or if it's winter! UVA rays are powerful enough to penetrate through glass in your office or home.

A lot of people have asked this before and it's the question of... when do I apply sun protection? Before or after makeup? I personally apply it after moisturiser and when it has already dried. Just so I can avoid any chemical mixing that may minimise sun protection.

✰ Sun Block acts to block out the sun rays from penetrating into the skin. So typically people associate sun block as thick and gives a white cast.

✰ Sun Screen acts as a screen and deflects sun rays, though it is not 100% successful so some still penetrate through

✰ Remember to apply enough sun protection. Two milligrams of sunscreen per square centimeter of skin is what usually testers for sun protection use. I talk more about this in the bottom of the post.

Always apply sun protection throughout the day! It does not stay effective for long

Anyways, back to the review!

This sun block is in the usual squeeze tube with a bright eye catching orange cap. It is small enough to put in a handbag, making it an easy option for on the go application. It is thin and small and doesn't take up unnecessary space.

As a sunblock, it is naturally going to have a white cast upon initial application. But when blended properly and dried, it blends into your skintone. I have a light skintone so I am not sure how this would work on individuals with a darker complexion.

It's an extremely light and somewhat watery sunblock that melts into the skin easily. It doesn't feel sticky or uncomfortable, skin is softer after application.

It doesn't keep the face matte or oil-free but I really like the feel of it on the skin.

The finish is neither matte or glossy, it settles into a natural finish. So it will not change the way your makeup sets or lasts as it imitates real skin finish. Typically with natural finish sunscreens, it feels thick on the skin making you feel like you have a lot of product on your face. But modern technology has advanced and that if no longer a concern.

This scent is really refreshing and natural. Slight floral notes and it smells extremely inviting.... Definitely not what you would expect from a sun screen. Parfum is even the last ingredient on the list (meaning it is the least used)

I forgot to take photos of the ingredients list... This is straight from my iPad
Sun blocks usually contain Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide, the ingredients that give sunblock its' white cast.

This sun block is 50ml, a rather small amount, especially as it is an important everyday product. If you hold the tube to the light, you can see that half is actually air. Like chip packets.

The ultimate question with sunscreen is about the SPF number. Is it true that the higher the number, the better the protection? From research that I have personally made and understood, the higher the SPF should give you better protection and usually the average consumer does not apply enough. So when you have a higher number, it should hopefully compensate for the lack of amount people apply. You notice how sunscreen/sunblock directions always say "apply liberally"?

However one problem is that when people apply a high SPF sunscreen/block, they seem to forego the other protective measures thinking it's okay. Wearing a wide brim hat and being covered adequately should also be a priority. Remember SPF only refers to UVB rays.

This product claims to last 12 hours and a half on the face but really you should be reapplying throughout the day, especially if you are in a sunny area.

I have always wanted to make a post about sun protection so I do apologise if this post seems to be more focused on that instead of the actual product.

My next review should be up today! And it will be about a rather controversial skincare product around the blogosphere. Stay tuned ;)

Review: TonyMoly Crystal Blusher in 07 Bronzing Brown 토니모리 크리스탈 블러셔 07호 브론징 브라운 리뷰

Here is a review of the popular TonyMoly Crystal Blusher in 07 Bronzing Brown

The TonyMoly Crystal Blusher in 07 Bronzing Brown was voted number 1 by the Get It Beauty team for bronzers/shading makeup. This product beat out 4 other higher name brands and consequently, became a top seller of TonyMoly, despite is being caleld a 'blusher'. Shading and bronzing in makeup is important in framing the face, especially when you have a relatively flat face, like me.

Min Hyorin, the old face of TonyMoly. Hyuna is the current model.

When looking for a bronzer or contour shade, it is very important to know the undertone of your skin. For example, if you get a warm contour shade, and you have cool tones, it will look orange against your skin. I am a self-diagnosed neutral tone, so finding a neutral shading powder would be best.

The packaging for the Tony Moly Crystal blusher is all the same. It is housed in a plastic see through case, with the product in the usual pan. The iconic TonyMoly font is used in the middle of the blusher. It is very simple, which is expected because of the cheap price. Each blusher is 6 grams.

The case locks close with the small lodging. It doesn't look very secure but it has yet to fall open by itself. This blusher case does not get dirty and is easily cleaned.

07 Bronzing Brown is the darkest brown shade in the TonyMoly Crystal blusher range. The lightest brown shade is number 5. It looks like a milk chocolate brown with neutral tones in the pan but when swatched, there's a slight warm, yellow tone that may look muddy on some skin tones if you apply it heavily. If you use this shade sparingly, it is unnoticeable and wearable. Apparently it is similar to Too Faced Milk Chocolate Soleil bronzer which is a lot more expensive than this TonyMoly blusher.

[EDIT] I am finding this shade to look orange on my neutral skintone. So if you have a warm skintone, this might be better suited for you.

This blusher is in a powder form and I will be lying if I said I have not sneezed before from using this to shade and contour my nose. The formula is extremely versatile and easy to build up in colour. It is not a very heavily pigmented contour shade, perfect for people who have a heavy hand or if you are beginning to contour as an everyday routine. It will help you escape from the possibly of applying too much and looking quite the opposite of how you wanted to look.

With that being said, it will be wise of you to slowly build up your shading rather than apply a lot at one time. It is extremely easy to blend, it does not dry out or cake up face makeup/skin texture. Remember to blend blend blend!!

Before and after contour.

As you can see from above, blending is extremely important in contouring. I have not blended properly in the above photo, leading to harsh looking lines.

But when properly blended, a flat face can easily be given dimension, colour and life. When it is done well, it can slim down the face. If you have extremely pale skin, this is a good bronzer because it is light but can be built up for whichever look you desire.

This is a solid contour shade that can be used by people with a light skin tone. Unfortunately this powder is not pigmented or dark enough for people with skintones higher than around a NC/NW30. I am around a NW15 and when used lightly, the shade is not very noticeable. But it is great as a natural bronzer.

The powder has decent wear time. For nose contour, this powder will not last a full day with primer/settling spray or powder on top. On the cheeks, it is only slightly less long lasting than my Napolean Perdis Set Contour Highlight Palette.

Average wear time without primer/setting makeup: 4 hours

Review: Aritaum World Glam Coating Tint in 06 Seoul 아리따움 월드 글램 코팅 틴트 06 서울

Here is my review of the Aritaum World Coating Tint in 06 Seoul.

It's only the beginning of 2015 but I already predict the Aritaum World Coating Tint in Seoul will be a favourite. Aritaum is really becoming a house hold name, with bloggers and individuals raving about the Honey Melting Tint, World Coating Tint and the Mono eyeshadows.

The Aritaum World Coating tint has been said to be a dupe for the expensive and popular YSL Rouge Pur Couture Glossy Stain but I do not own that product so I will not be comparing them two.

Random diversion...

Han Eu Ddeum, a Korean model and actress has been modelling for Aritaum for a while (pictured above). She is currently in Valid Love, a tvN drama that I absolutely love. But it's definitely not one for everyone. Here is the synopsis from because all the other synopsis' from different websites don't capture the essence of the drama.

"Kim Il Ri marries her high school teacher but falls in love with another man. She struggles as the passionate and hot ‘first love’ and fateful and stable ‘last love’ come in a switched order to her. This drama debates whether Il Ri's new love is valid from point of view of both her and her husband who watches his wife experiencing first love with another man during their marriage."

Please check it out if you are interested! I would love to talk to someone about it ^^

Anyways, back to the review.

The 10 shades in the Aritaum World Coating Tint range are named after cities around the world. I chose Seoul because I thought it was the most wearable for everyday.

Lip tint packaging doesn't really change from brand to brand, because this is the most practical as it goes. It's a semi-long tube with a twist opening for the doe-shaped application. The handle of the applicator has the word 'SEOUL' printed, and this appears with the whole range, the name corresponding to the shade is printed. I personally think it's a nice touch, it definitely makes picking out the shade easier if you own more than a few of them.

The strip between World Glame and Aritaum isn't of how much product you have left, but an actual strip of colour that is supposed to be similar to the shade it holds. The plastic black and grapefruit tube holds 9ml of product.

This shade reminds me of a grapefruit. Holistically it is pink, but some people also see orange in it. It is distinctly a grapefruit colour. I do not know any other way of describing it. The most accurate depiction of the shade is shown below. However the more layers you apply and the later you let it sit, it turns orange.

Also the lighting influences how the shade looks like. On the lips, unless the person is looking really closely, they will be unable to pick up the orange undertone. It is more pink than orange, which is unfortunate because all the pictures of me with the shade turns out more orange than pink.

Top: Gradient Bottom: Full (one coat)

It's a gel lip tint that feels heavy during application but after, it feels incredibly light on the lips. The warmth from your lips melt the formula, helping it sit longer. The formula looks really creamy and concentrated.

It's an extremely glossy formulat that slowly disappears when you eat or drink, but the finish lasts longer than normal lip glosses. I definitely applaud this product for this property because I adore glossy finishes. Also I feel like it volumises my lips.

One note though, if you use the doe applicator to apply, the colour comes out streaky and uneven. So you have to 'pop' your lips to blend the colour together if you dislike using your fingers to apply because lip tint stains last forever on the fingers. However this lip tint stain doesn't annoyingly overstay on the fingers, which I am thankful for.

It's a rather light colour with one layer so I usually apply two coats. Because it is glossy, there is high transfer, so keep it in mind when eating and drinking. It has a shorter wear time than average water based lip tints

Without eating: 5 hours
Eating: 3 hours

Like fruit jelly? It doesn't smell natural, yet I do think the fragrance is trying to imitate a fruit. Either way it doesn't taste like it, and the scent doesn't transfer on the lips.

Keep in mind the shade is more pink than orange!

I have really been enjoying this lip tint, along with my Rebel MAC lipstick. This shade is extremely flattering and brightens up my skin tone. It doesn't overwhelm my face when I have no face makeup on either, it complements no-makeup faces and dull skintones.

It doesn't appear neon or bright, no matter how many layers you apply making it a versatile lip product to use. I also find it easy to apply without a mirror, which is hard for lip tint applications, because it doesn't leave streaks when blended between your lips.

Do I recommend this range? Yes if you love glossy and comfortable lip products!

South Korea, Seoul Trip: Day 1-3 | Gwanghwamun, Tosokchon, Insadong Ssamziegil, Cheonggyecheon Stream, Myeongdong

I recently uploaded my Korean food vlog on my YouTube channel and the next blog posts will basically tell you where I went because I didn't specify in the vlog. There were a lot of things I didn't get to vlog or even put into the vlog because I didn't want it to get too long and secondly my video editing program was stuffing up.

So here are the pictures from Day 1, 2 and 3 of my 10 day trip to Seoul! And to complement this post, here is my vlog! My YouTube account can be found here.

Review: Skinfood Rose Essence Soft Cream Blusher 4 Orange Rose & 6 Edge Rose

First review of 2015 goes to Skinfood's Rose Essence Soft Cream Blusher in 04 Orange Rose and 06 Edge Rose, my favourite blushers of 2014.

Hello everybody! I arrived safely home on the 3rd of January after a 3 week trip to Seoul, Hong Kong and Taipei. The reason why I didn't post earlier was that I was trying to edit and upload my Korean food vlog but my editing program 'Windows Live Movie Maker' keeps freezing and doesn't play any of my saved copies. Which ultimately means I have to start anew each time I try to edit it. Needless to say I have half given up on editing any videos for the time being, maybe until I manage to save enough money to purchase a new laptop with an editing program that doesn't die on me.

Anyways, I hope 2015 has been kind to you all so far!

This Skinfood Rose Essence Soft Cream Blusher was part of Skinfood's 2014 Spring Collection which includes nail polish, makeup remover and lip tint etc.
